A myomectomy is a procedure that removes fibroids, which are non-cancerous tumors. Fibroids are the cause of about one-third of hysterectomies performed in the United States, according to the CDC. While we refer to fibroids as non-cancerous, in rare cases, cancer is present. Dr. Rotman has pioneered treatment algorithms that are used around the country to help minimize the risks from that small percentage of cancerous fibroids. By removing the fibroid tumors via myomectomy, many of the reasons for hysterectomy are also removed.
The answer to that question is to work in conjunction with Dr. Rotman, who will evaluate your specific medical needs and then discuss all of the options available to you. A laparoscopic myomectomy may not be the ideal procedure for you, even though it is a viable option for many women. The reality is that you will not know if myomectomy is right for you without first undergoing an evaluation and talking with an experienced gynecologic surgeon. Many women come to Dr. Rotman because he offers services that may not be available elsewhere. As a leading pioneer in the field of laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Rotman's work includes developing new techniques and tools to benefit his patients.
Most likely, the information provided by your primary gynecologist is correct. However, it is not uncommon for Dr. Rotman to provide a second or third opinion. A hysterectomy is not always the best solution for pelvic pain, endometriosis or fibroids. Some physicians and surgeons approach women's health with a good standard set of tools, but Dr. Rotman and his team have spent decades refining advanced operative laparoscopic techniques that are not available everywhere.
